1808 ~ 1908

Our First Century

 Highlights from our first century:

  • 1808 - The church was organized with just 13 members - 7 men and 6 women - under a congregational form of government.  Members gathered in fields in warm weather and in log homes when necessary.  There was no minister at that time except when a traveling missionary was persuaded to preach and celebrate the sacraments.
  • 1821 -Reuben Hurd was called as the first Pastor.  Soon after that work began to erect the first church building.
  • 1823 - Benjamin Simons, an elder in the church, walked to his former home in Orange County to sollicitate funds from family and old neighbors for his new church.  Benjamin raised $60.00 so the structure could be completed.  Also in 1823, by a vote of the congregation, we became Presbyterians.
  • 1850 - The church withdrew from the Ithaca Presbytery placing itself on record as opposed to slavery and remained independent until joining the Cortland, NY Presbytery in 1859.
  • 1861 - Following revival meetings, 65 people joined the church on Easter Sunday necessitating the enlargement of the Church.
  • 1898 - The first Washington Birthday supper was put on by the men of the Church and has been done every year since.
